Ash’s time in the Pokemon anime has finally come to an end in Japan, and a trailer for the new series, Pokemon Horizons, sets up the adventures to come.
We’ve known for a while now that Ash Ketchum, our beloved protagonist who caught barely any Pokemon, would no longer be the protagonist of the Pokemon anime. The final episode of Pokemon Journeys: The Series (the full title of the last season) has aired in Japan, bringing Ash’s story to a close, and likely a teary eye to many who grew up with the world’s best Pokemon trainer. But there’s a new generation of trainers that will lead the Pokemon anime, and there’s a new trailer showing the next series off properly for the first time.
Pokemon Horizons: The Series is set to debut this year, and will focus on a pair of new protagonists, Liko and Roy. Eagle-eyed fans already noticed that Liko’s hair clip resembles Ash’s insignia on his original cap, leading some to question if there’s some kind of a connection between the two, but it’s entirely possible that it’s just a way to suggest they’re the respective protagonists.
Following the passing of actor Lance Reddick, Bungie has shared that there are still „performances yet to come,” in Destiny 2.
Last week came the unfortunate news that Reddick had passed away, having appeared in a number of beloved series like The Wire, John Wick, Fringe, Guerilla Games’ pair of Horizon games, and notably as Commander Zavala in the Destiny series. Live service games are obviously a living, breathing thing, meaning that there are regular updates, often with more pieces of story. In a recent blog post from Bungie, the developer shared a tribute to Reddick, and noted that there are still performances of his to come in Destiny 2.
„As the voice of Commander Zavala—the stalwart commander of the Vanguard—Lance brought to life a character who has become virtually synonymous with Destiny itself,” reads the post. „For nearly a decade, Guardians around the world have found purpose and comfort in Zavala’s presence, bolstered by that unmistakable voice, so full of strength, serenity, and nobility… As an actor, musician, gamer, and family man, the passion Lance brought to the things he loved was reflected in the eyes and hearts of all who loved him.

BioShock’s Rapture is a place of necessity. The novelty of its underwater setting comes out of a practical concern: Why wouldn’t a player character just leave a dangerous place? The game’s thematic concerns came out of these gamey considerations. Give Big Daddies Little Sisters so that players are incentivized to attack difficult enemies to get resources. A world without regulation means that players can buy ammo from vending machines and shoot lightning out of their hands with „plasmids.”
Even the game’s preoccupation with objectivism comes from these kinds of practical considerations. In director Ken Levine’s own words, „we wanted a very believable reason why they would be there.” Rapture’s founder Andrew Ryan (a thinly veiled stand-in for writer Ayn Rand) cannot imagine a place where he can build his ideal, objectivist world on land, so it must be done in the sea. Though BioShock’s narrative ultimately, tepidly, condemns him, it also finds some nobility in his mission, in the purity of his vision. Maybe that’s because his goals were similar to the designers’. They too built Rapture out of necessity, a world constructed out of gameplay constraints, that could only exist digitally.

If you’re reading this, odds are that you have some opinion of BioShock Infinite, and it’s likely to be a passionate one. When it released in March 2013, it generated enormous fanfare, inspiring strong stances from both excited series fans and those who felt let down by the final product. The by-the-numbers nature of BioShock Infinite is perhaps most apparent in its moment-to-moment gameplay. Though ostensibly intended as the true successor to the original BioShock, Infinite simplifies the mechanics of the „immersive sim”-inspired series to the absolute minimum.
